Hiya! Just a quickie post to show you what I dug up in the garden yesterday. I was digging a hole to plant a new tomato bush and uncovered this little guy by accident. He was completely lifeless and I assume he must have wintered right there in my garden and still in hibernation. We clicked a few photos and buried him again. My husband went outside a little while later and discovered he had awakened and moving around. By the time I got back from an errand, he was out of sight.
Look at his beautiful carapace. (*) When I first saw him in the hole I was digging, I thought he was a little child's toy. The people that lived here before us, had little children and I'm always unearthing little treasures they left behind.
Here is a close-up. I'd never seen such a tiny turtle before, nor found one in our yard. If he finds his way to our pond, I hope he doesn't eat the fish!Thanks for letting me share. I'll be back tonight with the first of the Gina K preview peeks. Have a great day!
*edited to add: Oops, I thought the underside of the turtle shell was called the carapace, but that is the name for the upper part. The bottom part is called the plastron. Sorry!

Both of my boys LOVE turtles! They were soooo thrilled to see your post. My 8 year old would LOVE to have a stamp set featuring turtles... not cartoon-y ones like so many that are available, but a realistic one. *hint, hint!* :)

Your post was a science project and a card peak all wrapped in one place. I didn't know that turtles hibernated.
Thanks Theresa! I wish I could have one of those in my classroom, but I can't. I used to have one when I was a kid, oh so many years ago!
