Recessed Window Card

Hello! Wow, I intended to get this post up early today, but this card wound up taking a lot of time. The Try a New Technique challenge over at Split Coast Stampers, was to make a recessed window card. The instructions are here.

So, I guess I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, because I found the instructions a bit hard to follow. I wasn't sure which way to make my folds and how to attach it all, so I just winged it. After I was done, I went back and looked at the directions and they made perfect sense. LOL.

I did things just a bit differently, so here are the steps of how I made mine...

I decided to use my nestabilities rectangle die to make my score lines. I centered it on my cardstock, flat side toward the paper. I used my Cuttlebug to make the impression. The sandwich was, from bottom to top, Plate A, Plate B, nestabilities die raised side down, cardstock, tan mat, two pieces of cardstock (as spacers), Plate B. If you use thin cardstock, you made need three pieces for your spacers.

Using the nestabilities die with the flat side making the impression, caused two score lines, instead of just one. Using a craft knife, I cut a diagonal line going each direction from the outer corners. Then I folded each flap down on the outer score line and back in on the inner score line.

Next I cut a piece of cardstock to the same dimension as the outside of my nestabilities die. This piece will be the insert for my window.

After I stamped and sponged the insert to my liking, I placed it in the window. It was a very snug fit and it "pushed" the window edges into place.

Next, I turned it over and adhered the flaps to the insert.

I used larger nestabilities to make the Kiwi Kiss frame and adhered it down. Nest I added the butterfly and branches (colored with Copics) and popped them up on dimensionals inside the window and used craft glue where they overlapped the frame.

I used a Kiwi Kiss cardbase and adhered the window to it, leaving the framed portion just floating. I probably should have used dimensionals, but I didn't want them to be visable.

This is a very thick card, so I used a small acetate box, instead of a normal envelope. It fit perfectly and will be much sturdier for mailing or storing. I will still use a padded envelope when I send it, though.
