Sweet Calla Lily Video Tutorial and a Tip

Hi there! Today I have another video for you. This card features images from Elegant Florals. I didn't get step out photos for this card, but I'm definitely not giving up on step by step photos. Just once in a while I might do a video instead.

I also have a tip for getting card stock out of intricate die templates that I want to share with you. You all know how much I love my Spellbinders™ die templates and some of the amazing detailed die templates they have are among my favorites. I also love to sponge my die cuts while they are still in the die template. I was doing the wax paper trick to get the card stock easily out of the die templates, then placing them back in to do my stenciling. But really, I'm much too lazy for that. Then for a while I would crumple the wax paper and just rub it on the die template. Finally, it occurred to me there must be a better way and I decided to try rolling a pillar candle across the die templates and boy did that help!

So what I do is place my Spellbinders die template, cutting side up, on my work space, then I use a plain white pillar candle and just roll it across the die template, like a rolling pin. I mostly just use the weight of the candle, with just a tiny bit of extra pressure, and roll it two or three times.

I've found that if I use too much pressure it will embed tiny bits of wax in the die template and those squish onto my card stock and make shiny areas on my card stock when I cut/emboss.. If I do accidentally get some bits of wax stuck in the die template, I just use a stiff bristled paint brush to brush them away.

Usually, after doing the pillar candle trick, I can use the die template at least two or three more times before needing to do it again. The card stock comes out of the die templates so easily, using this technique, but not so easily that it just falls out while I'm trying to stencil. So it is the perfect solution for me. I hope it works for you, too!

And now for the video. You can see the wax paper trick in action toward the end of the video.

I recently pulled out some old candle ends to use on my dies as I have limited wax paper - did have to remove some bits of wax but it worked well. Lov the soft green on your card.

Hi there,
What a beautiful card! And thanks for the tip on using a candle to help release the paper from the die! I have been frustrated so many times I cannot tell you.
Great use for some of my candles I have sitting around unused.

Loved your video, Theresa! I hope you can do them more often, it is such a help seeing just how you color. Can't wait to get me a pillar candle to try this with and that die sure is elegant. I'll probably have to find that too.
